Biochemistry of Neurohypophysial Neurosecretion (2)
The common final pathway of these stimuli is phasic electrochemical ΓÇÿfiringΓÇÖ of the neurones themselves. The neurosecretory granules then fuse with the plasmalemma of the axon, and the nonapeptide and its specific neurophysin are released separately by exocytosis. The membrane of the granule is subsequently recaptured by micropinocytosis. Once released into the circulation, the neurophysin no longer appears to have any physiological function.
